A NEW medication launched in Australia today aims to allay parental fears
that ADHD-affected children may develop a drug addiction. Unlike existing
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder medicines, atomexotine hydrochloride
- sold as Strattera - contains no stimulants. Dr Michael McDowell, a Brisbane-based
developmental paediatrician who conducted clinical trials for the new medication,
said excluding stimulants from the Strattera mix has eliminated the possibility
of addiction.
"The fear parents have of amphetamines ... is the possibility of addiction
and abuse, whereas this current medication doesn't come with that risk,"
