WHAT IS ADHD
ADHD is an acronym for "Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder".
It is a condition in children and adults that is characterized by inattention,
impulsiveness and hyperactivity. It affects between 3 to7 percent of children,
and between 2-4 percent of adults.
ADHD "symptoms of inattention" include difficulty paying attention,
failing to follow instructions, not paying attention to details and making
careless mistakes. ADHD "symptoms of hyperactivity" and impulsiveness
include fidgety behaviour, the inability to engage in activities quietly,
difficulty remaining seated and waiting on others, and incessant chatter and
interrupting persons.
Some patients have all three ADHD symptoms, while others exhibit more of one
symptom than the other. Many persons occasionally exhibit these symptoms,
but patients with ADHD exhibit these symptoms more than persons their age.
For ADHD to be diagnosed, the symptoms must persist for a minimum of 6 months.
